WhatsApp is one of the most popular ways for families to stay in touch — but setting it up for an elderly parent can feel like navigating a maze if you've never done it before. This guide walks you through every step in plain English, whether your parent has an iPhone or an Android phone.

By the end of this guide your parent will be able to send messages, make free voice calls and video calls, and share photos with family — all for free.

💡 Before you start: Make sure your parent's phone is connected to Wi-Fi and has at least 30% battery. WhatsApp uses their phone number to set up the account, so have the phone nearby when you start.

What you'll need

Step 1 — Download WhatsApp

🍎 iPhone

  1. Open the App Store (blue icon with an A)
  2. Tap the Search tab at the bottom
  3. Type WhatsApp and tap Search
  4. Tap the Get button next to WhatsApp Messenger
  5. Wait for it to download and install
  6. Tap Open when it's done

🤖 Android

  1. Open the Play Store (colourful triangle icon)
  2. Tap the Search bar at the top
  3. Type WhatsApp and tap the magnifying glass
  4. Tap Install next to WhatsApp Messenger
  5. Wait for it to download and install
  6. Tap Open when it's done

Step 2 — Agree to the terms

2
Tap Agree and Continue
When WhatsApp opens for the first time it will show you its terms and privacy policy. Tap Agree and Continue at the bottom of the screen. You don't need to read all of this — it's just the standard agreement to use the app.

Step 3 — Enter the phone number

3
Type in the phone number
WhatsApp will ask for a phone number. Make sure the country code is set to United Kingdom (+44). Then type the phone number without the leading 0. So if the number is 07712 345678, type 7712 345678.
💡 The country code +44 should already be selected if the phone is set to UK. If not tap the flag and search for United Kingdom.

Step 4 — Verify with a code

4
Enter the 6-digit verification code
WhatsApp will send a text message to the phone number with a 6-digit code. Open the Messages app, find the text from WhatsApp, and type that code into WhatsApp. On most phones WhatsApp will detect the code automatically and fill it in for you.
💡 If the code doesn't arrive after 60 seconds tap "Resend SMS" to get a new one.

Step 5 — Set up the profile

5
Add a name and photo
WhatsApp will ask for a name — this is what family and friends will see. Type their first name, or whatever they'd like to be known as. Adding a photo is optional but helps family members recognise them. Tap the circle to add a photo from the camera roll, or skip this step for now.

Step 6 — Allow access to contacts

6
Tap Allow when asked about contacts
WhatsApp will ask permission to access the phone's contacts. Tap Allow — this is important. Without this permission WhatsApp won't be able to show which of their contacts are already on WhatsApp, so they won't be able to message anyone.

Step 7 — Find family members to message

7
Start a conversation
Tap the green pencil icon (iPhone) or the green chat bubble (Android) to start a new message. You'll see a list of contacts who are already on WhatsApp. Tap on a family member's name to open a chat and send your first message.
💡 If a family member doesn't appear in the list they may not have WhatsApp yet, or their number might be saved differently in the contacts. Check the number is saved correctly in the phone's contacts app.

How to make a free voice or video call on WhatsApp

Once WhatsApp is set up, calling is completely free over Wi-Fi — even to family members abroad. Here's how:

1
Open the conversation
Tap on the family member's name to open the chat.
2
Tap the phone or video icon
At the top right of the screen you'll see a phone icon for a voice call and a video camera icon for a video call. Tap whichever you want. The call will ring on the other person's phone just like a normal phone call.

⚠️ Important: WhatsApp calls use internet data, not phone minutes. Over Wi-Fi they're completely free. If your parent uses mobile data instead of Wi-Fi it will use their data allowance. Make sure they're connected to Wi-Fi for calls whenever possible.

Common problems and how to fix them

"I can't find my family member on WhatsApp"

Check the number is saved correctly in the phone's Contacts app. WhatsApp matches people by their exact phone number — if it's saved incorrectly or without the country code it won't find them. Try saving the number with +44 at the start instead of 0.

"The verification code isn't arriving"

Wait 60 seconds and tap Resend SMS. Make sure the phone number was entered correctly without the leading 0. If it still doesn't arrive the phone may need a signal check — try moving to a window or stepping outside briefly.

"WhatsApp keeps asking to access the microphone"

This is normal — WhatsApp needs microphone access to make voice calls. Tap Allow when asked. Without this permission voice and video calls won't work.

"My parent accidentally deleted a message — can they get it back?"

Unfortunately deleted messages can't be recovered once deleted. Reassure them that this is fine and happens to everyone — just let the conversation continue from where it is.
